Spoiler alert this is going to be a very wordy post with no pictures and no recipes. For the next month my blog is going to transition a bit; away from healthy baked goods and more towards healthy savory recipes. This is because I am finally starting my Whole30. So why a blog post now with no recipe? Before I transition my blog for my Whole30 I wanted to share with why I’m doing it, how I’m planning, and how I’m going to make it my own!
I have been planning my Whole30 since the summer and now that I have set a start date December 27th I am in full on planning mode. That being said I am as much planning healthy recipes as I am cramming in lots of foods I cannot eat starting the 27th. For example it’s almost my boyfriend’s mothers birthday so I am in the process of making a not healthy at all chocolate-caramel cake. Partly for celebration and partly because I need my sugar fix before cutting it out.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Whole30 plan go read up on it! I’m always skeptical of any sort of cleanse plan but after reading their website and laughing at phrases such as “sex with your pants on food.” I decided I need to try; plus its only 30 days, I can do this. I am not doing this to loose weight but more as a way to jump start healthier eating patterns and to see how eating better food affects me overall. I decided to start on the 27th that way I can eat as I please during the holidays and will be done with the program by my birthday.
I am not going to follow all of the Whole30, call me a cheater but I’m an adult I can do what I want. The first rule I’m not going to follow is the no alcohol rule. While I don’t doubt that’d be great for me I just know I’ll end up cheating on it and if I cheat there then I’ll keep cheating and next thing you know I’ll be eating an ice cream sundae. However instead of the sugary cider and sangria I usually enjoy I’m going to stick to only red wine during my program. Because I’m my head that’s less sugar so it’s better for me.
The other rule I’m going to break is sort of complicated because it’s breaking a lot of rules. My boyfriend and I are currently trying to open a restaurant (shameless plug check here to click it out) and part of the process is doing a pop up restaurant in January. As a pastry chef I need to be able to taste what I am serving so on that day I will allow myself small tastes of unwhole30 products, because work is important. But I will do my best to only taste and not snack, which in itself will be hard for me because I am a snack monster.
Now to prepare for my Whole30 I am trying to plan all my meals ahead of time as well as stock my freezer with quick healthy meals. Right now my freezer is filled with lots of chicken and pork stock, tomato soup, squash soup, “creamed” spinach, paleo meatballs, shredded pork, and frozen grapes for mindless snacking! I still have another week to load it up so come the 27th I should be prepared.
I know for sure the hardest part of this journey will be the no sugars. Already being gluten free make the transition a bit easier. But as someone who still drinks a glass of milk with dinner each night there will definitely be some challenges. I am going to do my best to post each day, not always a recipe but a general guide of what I am eating and more important how I am feeling. Don’t worry though I still have over a week to post unwhole30 recipes so I have a feeling there’s going to be some baked goods in my future.
